BC is under a state of emergency. Thousands are displaced. Homes are gone. And once again Canada acts surprised by the same predictable summer disaster.
We’re one of the largest countries in the world with enormous resources, yet our wildfire response remains inadequate. A first-ever national fleet of four leased air tankers and five helicopters, backed by $316.7 million over five years, is not enough. Canada has committed billions to international priorities, including $5 billion for Ukraine and $2.4 billion in refugee costs.

Imagine if we treated Canadian lives and communities as the priority: a real national wildfire force, 25 Canadian-owned water bombers, dedicated helicopters, trained crews, and the multi-year operational capacity to respond before fires become catastrophes.. We pay the taxes. We deserve world-class protection.
The same attitude shows up on the ground. City plants ripped out and sold on Facebook Marketplace. Garbage dumped in parks and green spaces. Fines fail to deter, and public spaces increasingly feel like they belong to no one.
We can do better. Caring about the rest of the world does not require us to neglect our own communities. We have to put the oxygen mask on ourselves before we can help anyone else.
