Investigators with the York Regional Police are appealing for witnesses to help identify suspects involved in a failed home invasion in the City of Vaughan.

It remains unclear if the incident is related to a recent execution-style shooting of a father in the same neighborhood during a home invasion.

According to York police, on Sunday, August 31, at approximately 2:20 a.m., officers were called to the area of Major Mackenzie Drive and Highway 27 for the report of a home invasion in progress.

After reviewing front-entrance security footage, police learned three male suspects, wearing dark clothing and face coverings, attempted to smash their way into the home.

At least one suspect was armed with a handgun.

Two adults and two children were in the home at the time.

Occupants can be heard yelling and screaming as the men tried to force their way in before retreating.

A home security alarm was triggered and the suspects fled in a dark-coloured SUV.

Nothing was taken and no one was injured.

York Region Police held a Wednesday press conference where Chief Jim MacSween told citizens their “best defence was to comply.”

"In the unlikely event that you find yourself the victim of a home invasion, we are urging citizens not to take matters into their own hands,” MacSween said at the meeting.

“This could mean locking yourself in a room away from the perpetrators, hiding, fleeing the home. But don't engage unless absolutely necessary,” the Chief continued, before reiterating that the York region remains a “safe area to live.”
