In a Sunday media release, York police said officers were called to a residence near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday where they found a 46-year-old man suffering from “trauma to his body” inside his home.
Abdul Aleem Farooqi of Vaughan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are looking for at least three suspects, described as wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
Investigators believe the incident was targeted and are canvassing the area for witnesses and security footage.
The case comes amid heightened public debate over self-defence in Canada.
In Lindsay, Ont., earlier this summer, Jeremy McDonald was charged after allegedly confronting a crossbow-carrying intruder in his home — a case that fuelled controversy over whether Canadian laws adequately protect homeowners who defend themselves.
Legal scholars note that unlike some U.S. states with so-called “castle doctrine” laws, Canadian law does not grant homeowners absolute rights to use deadly force against intruders.
The Criminal Code permits reasonable force in defence of property or life, a standard critics argue is increasingly unclear as violent break-ins rise.
I wonder if the police are just making up stuff now against homeowners who are being killed by home invaders? I would tend to not believe much if anything the police tell the public. Was this home owner really "targetted" or have the police simply invented this theory to make this violent crime appear less provocotive to the public for the sake of not arousing the anger of the public about all of the home invasions taking place? The information police are now days releasing to the public is paltry and indeed scarce. They hardly provide many public details as they did 10 or 15 years ago about descriptions of potential criminals. When a criminal is non-white the police refuse to give many details or descriptions of appearance, race, color or any other details. However, its more than often the opposite approach when an alleged caucasian criminal's description is given to the public. In almost every case, a full description is usually provided to the "media". I would suggest that citizens are and have lost faith in our police forces as they collude with corrupt, woke, left wing governments in protecting violent criminals which also support loosening of bail conditions and penalites for convicted criminals. I would sadly even say that I no longer trust police, judges, courts and surely not our governments any longer. They all have been corrupted to the point of making these institutions completely impotent and corrupt in conducting their functions to serve justice.....In Canada there is no to little justice for innocent law abiding victims of non-violent and violent crime......Our governments expect citizens to allow ourselves to be victims of crime without allowing us a fair and reasonable opportunity to fight back and robustly defend ourselves and loved ones from home invaders and other violent criminal attacks.......
The very next day after Jeremy was arrested I called the police in Lindsay and the female cop at the phone (when was the last time a male answered the phone) & said they had no choice but to arrest this poor man because of the laws in Ontario & Dick Fraud says it's not his fault, these people in our institutions are scum of the earth criminal liars...!!!
