Peel Regional Police have charged two men in connection with a series of organized retail thefts targeting LCBO locations across the region, with police alleging the losses total an estimated $300,000.
In a Wednesday morning announcement, Peel police said Anuj Kumar, 25, is allegedly responsible for an extensive number of thefts totalling approximately $300,000 in stolen alcohol from various LCBO stores. Simarpreet Singh, 29, is also believed to have been involved in the coordinated thefts.
As a result of the investigation, Kumar and Singh were arrested and charged with a total of 35 offences related to theft, possession of property obtained by crime, and four drug-related offences.
In addition, police executed four outstanding arrest warrants.
Both individuals were held for bail hearings.
Police added that “the investigation remains ongoing” and that “more arrests and charges are anticipated.”
The arrests of Kumar and Singh follow several others in Ontario in recent months, also related specifically to retail alcohol thefts.
In March, for instance, Peel Regional Police charged another five individuals allegedly connected with an organized theft ring that targeted LCBO stores across Ontario.
The theft operation allegedly involved multiple suspects entering the store, providing a lookout and distraction, while accomplices stole boxes of expensive liquor.
The arrests also come a full year after several viral videos documented what appeared to be brazen daytime robberies of retail liquor stores in Ontario.
