Trump admin “eager” to recognize an independent Alberta: Glenn Beck

A lawyer who represented Freedom Convoy organizers claims the U.S. administration would recognize Alberta as an independent state if the province voted to secede from Canada. He made the comments on a popular American conservative podcast.

Attorney Keith Wilson appeared on the U.S. podcast “The Glenn Beck Program” to speak about U.S. President Donald Trump’s senior officials saying the U.S. would recognize Alberta if it chose to break off from Canada in a meeting.

“So my understanding from the meetings that have occurred is that the Trump administration officials have indicated that the US would recognize a vote by the people of Alberta to become independent,” Wilson said on the podcast. “So that’s very important to us.”

Wilson told True North that the General Council for the secessionist “Alberta Prosperity Project,” Jeff Rath confirmed with him that after a meeting with movement supporter Dr. Dennis Modry, CEO Mitch Sylvester and himself, the U.S. administration intends to recognize Alberta’s independence if the referendum is successful.

Beck, a long-time conservative commentator, said the administration was “eager” to recognize Alberta as an independent state.

“We expect the vote to occur in 2026 sometime around this time next year. And I think, I think, I think the Trump administration also recognizes you guys have right above your border in Montana, the third largest reserve of oil and gas in the world,” Keith told Beck. “Look at the power of that, the energy independence. It takes you from an energy superpower to a mega superpower.”

Wilson argued Alberta is “culturally aligned” with many American states, making it a good ally to the U.S. administration.

“I think there’s a recognition that Canada’s leftists in Ottawa are being global disruptors. They’re not helping,” Wilson said on the podcast. “They’re helping build these governments with this anti-freedom, anti-Christian phenomena that we’re seeing that is hard to believe is happening, but it’s an encouraging fact that these discussions are occurring.”

Wilson highlighted many Albertans’ grievances with the Liberal government, including its gun confiscation program, its attacks on Christianity and freedom, various governments’ approach to U.S. Christian singer Sean Feucht, and federal anti-production legislation like anti-energy laws and forced equalization.

Wilson told True North he supports an independent Alberta developing trade agreements and other economic relationships with the U.S., dismissing the suggestion Alberta could be a 51st state. Rise of Alberta, a pro-independence page on X, noted both sides said the idea of Alberta becoming a 51st state was unlikely.

“It would be very difficult in the foreseeable future, if not decades, for Alberta to become the 51st state,” Wilson said. “It would require a majority, two-thirds vote at the Senate, and the Democrats aren’t going to go there unless they get Washington added as a state and Puerto Rico, which are both blue states. And so it would totally screw up the electoral math.”

The Rise of Alberta stated that the talks between the U.S. and the Alberta Prosperity Project leadership, who purported to represent the independence movement, focused on immediate recognition, a tariff-free trade deal, and financing. The U.S also allegedly offered to finance the new state with a $500 million transition loan to support the costs of separation.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reaffirmed on Monday that her intention was not to secede from Canada, but to “have a strong and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada.” Smith previously pledged to allow Albertans to vote on independence if the required number of signatures for a citizen petition were collected. She has since said she was doing everything in her power to “prevent” a referendum.
