Keep pushing for independence Alberta, although I am from Northern Ontario I would vote in your favour……we here in N.O. get the same treatment from Ottawa and our southern population, they have taken and still are raping all our resources to prop up Bay Street. Thankfully you have Premier Smith, we have Dougieboy Ford, who hasn’t figured out,who he is, or for, other than himself!!

Thank you, Curtis. 11 years ago I lived in southwest Ontario but the Liberals started to ruin it under Dalton McGuinty/Kathleen Wynne. (God, we real consercatices in Ontario used to ask, re Wynne, not who is she but what is she?)

And I used to love the 'Ford Nation' stuff but Dougie is looping out on something .. I don't know what...

Would serve Carney right.

He decides on his own, with NO vote in the House of Commons, to recognize a terror state like Palestine, glad to see that Trump would recognize statehood for Alberta, a much more realistic choice

"She has since said she was doing everything in her power to “prevent” a referendum."

There you have it folks. Danielle Smith has chosen to stand with the Laurentian Elites rather than what's best for Albertans. We need to get that referendum on the ballot as soon as possible. It needs to be clear and the voters need to be honestly told the implications. If some still have sentimental and family ties to Canada, you can keep your Canadian Citizenship and enjoy dual citizenship.

To be meaningful, all voters need to be Canadian Citizens and resident in Alberta for at least three years. There has been an influx of immigrants of late who are not Canadian Citizens and do not understand the Alberta dynamics who should not have a vote in this referendum.

I strongly agree with your comments, as for Danielle can't decide yet if she is walking a tight rope and choosing her words carefully or really standing with the Laurentian Elites. We will know very soon.

Why do we subsidize USA with cheaper oil when we could get world prices with pipe lines to the EAST and WEST and no tanker band!!

Correct, Wayne. Maybe they are waiting for Carney to take them to the communist utopia of the WEF...

I wish PM Carney had Canada front and center in his plans like Danielle Smith has Alberta front and center She does not want to separate but have nation status within Canada as does Quebec And if you are watching Quebec is doing very well with nation status still an integral part of Canada but manages their own education health immigration and language

Marcus, you are being unnecessary derogatory when you call Quebec people 'frogs' I am an eastern Canadian of Acadian descent now living permanently in Alberta), not from Quebec, and French Canadians are mostly decent people. Wash your mouth.

in fact The federal government redistributes the money from the provinces so each province can provide for their citizens I take exception to the "frog" comment My family are Quebec residents Earn a lot of money in their employment and pay their fair share of taxes Alberta is a rich province so in the equalization payments they definitely do pay a substantial amount to the federal government You would rather citizens of another province have difficulty providing essential services My comment was about nation status and I hope that is what Alberta gets on the referendum Im sure they will continue paying more taxes

OMG seq... a fun phrase used for hundreds of years... my family's ancestors were in Louisbourg.

My point was that Quebec stayed in Canada because they knew that they are a Payee in Confederation. But why would 'Berta stay? They'd be ten times wealthier, at a minimum, as a Republic.

Expand full comment
seq's avatar

Quebec stayed as two separation votes failed so PM Trudeau gave them nation status all the perks of a nation but federal transfer payments in place

Alberta will likely be the same but can have more pipelines into the USA

and will be much wealthier I do not think Quebecers think the tag " frog"is a fun phrase Its actually quite ignorant

So...you made my point.

seq's avatar

What point??? the fun phrase frog.. the transfer of wealth to other provinces the increase in wealth of "BERTA"

Berta as you call Alberta does not want to separate just the ability to manage their own province as a single sovereign state You realize USA cannot absorb them Congress and Senate will vote it down Unless of course DC and Puerto rico are made states

Will there still be transfer of wealth to the federal government we will see

Im sure there will be a transfer of the wealth BERTA cares about the citizens of this country

The Alberta Prosperity Project whose town halls I have attended has explained, the best, of why Alberta will never get a great deal with Ottawa. Danielle Smith - who might help to vote in - needs to see this. We need to get independent ASAP.

I live in Manitoba and support Alberta independence because it will eventually cause a domino effect with other provinces separating from Canada as well, and eventually leading to statehood in the United States.

seq's avatar

That will never happen USA senate and Congress will block unless DC and Puerto Rico

are made states Not likely to happen as they are filled with democrats and that wont fly

And yet Democrats are fleeing that realm in thousands. Senate and Congress are increasingly represented by Republicans.

Smith is my premier and a pretty decent one, and Poilievre is now my Member of Parliament. Here in east central Alberta the feeling is very high for Alberta independence away from Canada. Smith/Poilievre are wrong on that issue. I'd vote for it in a heartbeat. I've been accused of being a traitor for saying that but it is Canada who betrayed me, not I Canada. I spent all my life supporting this country and I'm now sick of what's happening to it ( IE Ottawa Thugs).

Now let's be serious here. Anyone who is following what is happening in the US today clearly would not want Trump meddling in our country. It is a real scary mess south of the border and getting worse. My entire career was in oil & gas in Calgary. I continue to have many friendships with former colleagues in the Houston office who are extremely concerned about the state of affairs in their country. They are conservatives and they are saying to me that Trump is not fit for office, period. They are very concerned about their fall into autocracy, seriously! Trump is only interested in Alberta oil & gas for the money, please let's not get fooled here. Carney needs to approve the pipeline now!

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

Yep, it is the money. Albertans , remember that money is not everything, but freedom and liberty are at the top of the list. Money is just a way to trade. Wealth is freedom to do what You will with Your money, nothing else.

Expand full comment
Joe Boudreault's avatar

OK, Willow, let's get even more serious: your so-called conservatives in Houston are not really conservatives if they think Trump is not fit for office... they are brain dead, believe me. Trump is the best president the United States has ever had, even better than Lincoln or Reagan. The USA is in many ways (but not all ways) in better shape than Canada. They are more freedom oriented and they have a great administration running them right now. This is not all about trade and economy, this is about freedom. Trump is all about freedom and peace.

So unknoy your knickers, Willow, and think again. You're not being sensible. A huge number of us here in Alberta really like what Trump is doing and really like the idea of joining them. My county is called Flagstaff and the next one is called Paint Earth, for heaven sakes! American southwest territories ...hint hint...

Willow's avatar

Respectfully, you do not get to share your opinion as fact. My friends are, in fact, conservative and have been for as long as I have known them. You come along and state that my friends are not conservative and that they are brain dead, and to 'believe you', while dismissing what my friends are sayings as not their truth!

In my opinion you seem unnecessarily agitated with me expressing what my colleagues and I both think about the state of affairs in the US. So you tell me to think again and unknot my knickers? Perhaps your knickers are in a twist shall we say!

Expand full comment
Joe Boudreault's avatar

Respectfully, is that YOUR opinion or is it a fact?

If your Houston friends are concerned about the USA becoming an autocracy, that was more valid under Joe Biden and those Communists than it ever will be under Trump. No, they are not conservatives if this is the way they think ...at least not Alberta kind of conservative, which I am.

While it's nice of our friends to the south are 'open' to our independence it has nothing to do with it. Alberta is going to be a sovereign nation and I'd consider the 51st state as an option as well.

Beck's platform has become a serious venue for these kinds of discussions, which is wild when you think about how he used to be dismissed as just another conservative shock jock. The fact that Wilson is using his show to float this infomation about Trump admin support shows how influential Beck's audience has become. Whether Alberta actually goes through with independance is another question entirely, but the conversation itself is fascinatig.

Well, here I am filling in your blanks, from Flagstaff county in central east Alberta (Pierre Poilievre's territory now): I believe that Smith is really just virtue signaling to Ottawa in order to get better deals for Alberta. She is not betraying the idea of Alberta independence. She's a pretty smart lady and savvy when it comes to jurisdictions provincially and federally. She is already poking Mark Carney with a pretty damn sharp stick.
