The Smith government and the Alberta teachers union had a negotiated agreement which the teachers then rejected, demanding even more money. However, at the core of the teacher's rejection of what their own union saw as a decent agreement is their utter antipathy towards the UPC government and itself and its politics. They detest the limits the Smith government put on the grooming of children with trans propaganda in the classroom. They hate that they now have to inform parents if a child, at their insistence, begins "transitioning" to the opposite gender. They also completely hate that they were ordered to remove what amounted to child pornography from elementary school libraries. They fear alternative schooling for children such as occurs in private schools, home schooling, and Alberta charter schools and have argued for their abolition. These place children out of their power to indoctrinate in leftist ideology. This is what drives their rejection of any settlement as their ultimate goal is to damage the Smith government and, if possible, bring it down.

The notwithstanding clause is needed because the Supreme Court has recognized a charter right to collective bargaining and a right to strike. It’s interesting that the federal government is trying to change the constitution by judicial fiat to restrict use of the notwithstanding clause, yet over the past year or so, they have ordered several federal sector unions back to work with nothing more than a minister’s order, sweeping away the constitution like yesterday’s trash.

I can see where an independent Alberta would be the way to go. Make our own constitution and legal laws. Keep our tax dollars at home, no middleman or government throwing the cash out the window. These teachers are out of sink. They're tuned into the woke BS and the federal greed has effected their brain. A lot of this I blame on the unions themselves. The teachers are just following along with what ever the union says. Between the federal crime syndicate and unions, they've brought the country to it's knees.

Woke ideologies are being mandated in every segment of Canadian lives by Marxist Carney and the Liberal government! Teachers are some of the “tools” that carry this out! Everyone should know and understand that for many years, ALL unions country-wide have been, and are, far left leaning, riddled with extreme socialist communistic ideologies! Taking down a province and creating unrest, hatred and bankrupting fiscal responsibilities are just some of their playbook tools! Canada Post unions fall under these same tactics as do all government connected-funded groups!

That I believed that for years myself. And I think about Greece who was heavily unionized. They turned a healthy country into a slum from bankrupting the country. And it appears that these fools connected with the UN wef have it in their head that that is the way to go. Sure cause when that comes about, by then all the money is in the elites pockets. They don't suffer, but they enjoy watching the peasants suffer and live like dogs in the street. They have no pride or conscience.

Very accurate description Logan!! Carney is deeply embedded in the membership of both WEF and corrupt UN - goals of both are reducing every ounce of democracy and freedoms from Canada! Making citizens completely reliant on, and controlled by, big government!!!

Yes the UN has been pushing for years for one world order. Making the UN the government for all. With flunkies carry out their duties throughout the world. At that point all humanity will have ceased to exist. People would brainwashed robots.

I agree that the teachers need help. The abuse from students toward teachers is real. Parents must take responsibility for their child's behavior.

And, THE STUDENTS NEED HELP! Learning time is disrupted by special needs and/or aggressive students. The inclusion practices of the current education system harms all students, special needs or not. Ideological driven curriculum must stop.

An ask of $2 billion is outrageous. Class size has been an issue for at least 30 years and more money should not come without full accountability. Blame and finger pointing from the ATA toward the government doesn't help matters. It’s important to take a serious look at how the ATA and Boards of Education spend their money so that every dollar truly supports students.

The September 2025 tentative agreement is a good deal. The Class Size and Complexity Task Force is a good idea. Will the ATA and teachers agree?

The answer to you question, is no. That's why they went on strike, cause the didn't agree. But you're right it was a good offer. And at an average of 21 students per class I don't think it's big.

Teachers don’t need more of their same woke indoctrinated kind - they need to start teaching meaningful 3R learning, encouraging critical thinking skills, treating disciplined behaviours with consequences, sharing student progress and behaviours with parents instead of secretly encouraging the latest “transie” fad, to name just a few “unique” ideas!!! Taxpayer dollars pay these whining spineless people! We need more “bang for the buck” when it comes to our kids - Canada’s next generation of rulers!!!!!

I couldn't agree more. They've turned the schools into a brain washing machine. Even the teachers have been brainwashed from their time in university.

Has anyone noticed - teachers who speak out and contradict this degrading woke ideology are either laid off without pay or simply fired!!!!

I know that's happened in Ontario and BC. It's a good indication as what's going on in the class rooms, I would say. In one word, "brainwashing".

Classroom complexity,

How come we never heard of that ?BS in the past?

Is it because of all these third world muslim "immigrants" (invaders) the Liberals have and are allowing to flooding the country with?

Classroom complexity has reached a peak due to so many new immigrants and the lack of specialized classrooms for children with severe learning disabilities and behaviours that often lead to violent incidents and disruptions.

The ATA had two months to negotiate the contract.

The government should open the schools for 12 months a year with teachers getting 2weeks vacation, plus Christmas and Easter. They can rotate the students or have split class rooms to eliminate over crowding classes. The teachers are the ones shaping our youth, so let them show us how to problem solve in real time.

As I’ve said before teachers should not be able to strike. They currently have the ATA, a labour union. It should be a professional organization that deals with teacher competency, discipline and certification. Teacher’s pensions should be through the government.

Re the large school boards, they need to be flattened. Too many administrative layers that eat up dollars. Everyone from superintendent down to the teacher, where the rubber meets the road, has a teaching certificate and are used to calculate average class size, which is ridiculous. Average class size should be calculated by number of teachers actually in the classroom. Anyway, get the middle management into the classroom full time at teacher’s salaries. If they choose not to go there is the door and from the salary saved two or more teachers can be hired to actually be in the classroom.

Probably more classroom space is then also needed and can be solved temporarily by using portables. Cheers!

The 2 classrooms my family members are in are not overcrowded or understaffed. These issues do exist, but they are not across the board.

The strike has gone into its 4th week and that is a long time.

I'm glad the schools will be open tomorrow.
