Police approve weekly loudspeaker call to prayer at Regina mosque
The permit was reapproved after the mosque paused broadcasts following online threats and surveyed residents for feedback.
A Regina mosque has been cleared to resume broadcasting its weekly Islamic call to prayer after police approved a new permit, weeks after online backlash and threats forced the congregation to temporarily stop using rooftop loudspeakers.
Regina City Jamia Masjid announced Friday that the Regina Police Service approved its application to broadcast the Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, every Friday before midday prayers.
The call will last roughly two to three minutes and will be broadcast through speakers mounted on the mosque’s rooftop.
“We would like to sincerely thank the Regina Police Service, the Mayor and City Council of Regina, local churches, faith leaders, and religious organizations who supported freedom of religion and mutual respect in our community,” the mosque said in a statement.
