Canadians living in Regina’s downtown core were subjected to an outdoor Islamic call to prayer broadcast out loud from a mosque for the first time just steps from City Hall.

The Regina City Jamia Masjid used rooftop speakers at its McIntyre Street location to project the Adhan at 1 p.m., marking a trial run approved by police and set to run at least through mid-July.

Anisur Rahaman of the RCJM broadcast told CTV News it would “help introduce” the mosque to both Muslim and non-Muslim residents from its downtown location.

Mosque officials said the outdoor call to prayer will last two to three minutes and be broadcast only on Fridays before Jumu’ah services.
