The Carney government is hitting the United States with $27.6 billion in retaliatory tariffs while rolling out another $7.5 billion in taxpayer-backed support for Canadian workers and businesses caught in the escalating trade war.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced Tuesday that Canada will impose counter-tariffs on more than 700 American products beginning Sept. 8, following the collapse of trade negotiations with the Trump administration.
The measures come after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping 50 per cent tariffs on roughly $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend. Ottawa says its retaliation will match the American tariffs “dollar-for-dollar” and “rate-for-rate.”
“Our dollar-for-dollar, rate-for-rate counter-tariffs as well as a multi-billion-dollar support package will protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses,” Champagne said.
