U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Canada’s auto and steel industry to 50 per cent after Canada rejected a tentative trade deal with the U.S., which Prime Minister Mark Carney said would put Canada at a disadvantage.
Trump announced the new wave of planned tariffs Monday morning after a breakdown in trade talks throughout the week.
The U.S. President said the new tariffs would be placed on Canada’s auto and steel industry on January 1, 2027, saying that the U.S. “doesn’t need Canada.”
