Liberal MPs voted 5-4 Thursday to make sure Canadians won't find out, killing a Commons investigation before ministers could be questioned or secret negotiating records released.
The heated committee showdown came after the Carney government quietly agreed to give the United States 50 per cent of defined net toll revenues from the Canadian-financed bridge for 15 years—a concession not contained in the original 2012 Crossing Agreement and one the Prime Minister publicly described in terms later contradicted by the text of the agreement.
Conservative MPs argued Canadians were entitled to know why Ottawa surrendered a share of bridge revenues after taxpayers alone financed the project’s roughly $6.4 billion construction cost, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
“It is incredibly important for us as parliamentarians to have factual information,” Conservative MP Dan Albas told the committee.
“The Prime Minister made statements that directly contradict what was in the agreement, and made them multiple times.”
