Former Liberal MP loses Fredericton mayoral bid
Polls closed with Steve Hicks taking 53.3 per cent of the votes over former Liberal MP Jenica Atwin who received 44.8 per cent.
Former Liberal MP Jenica Atwin lost against long-time city councillor Steve Hicks in her bid to become the next mayor of Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Atwin was elected to the House of Commons in 2019 as a member of the Green Party before crossing the floor and being re-elected in 2021 as a Liberal. Atwin finished her term and announced she would not run in the 2025 federal election.
Atwin’s loss comes shortly after Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith lost the Ontario Liberal nomination in Scarborough Southwest to pizza shop owner Ahsanul Hafiz.
Atwin conceded defeat around late Monday night, before calling Hicks to congratulate him.
“I know we both put a lot of work in the last couple of months, so I wish him a lot of energy and stamina to … tackle the big challenges ahead for the city,” she said.
Steve Hicks, a city councillor in Fredericton, New Brunswick, has won the mayoral race against former Liberal MP Jenica Atwin to replace Kate Rogers.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us,” Hicks told a crowded room following his victory. “We ran on a platform of public safety and affordability and we have a lot of work to do.”
