A closely contested Ontario Liberal nomination race in Scarborough Southwest is drawing attention across provincial political circles after federal Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith lost the contest by just 19 votes to newcomer Ahsanul Hafiz.

The result could have major implications for the upcoming Ontario Liberal leadership race, as Erskine-Smith had been widely viewed as a potential contender seeking a return to provincial politics to strengthen his profile against Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives.
