In a remarkable pivot, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will eliminate most of its retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
In response to this, during a White House press conference at the oval office, U.S. President Donald Trump said “I like Carney a lot, I think he’s a good person, and we had a very good talk yesterday, so I think it’ll be good.”
This comes only one day after Carney spoke with Donald Trump on a Thursday phone call discussing trade and security. Despite advocating for an ‘elbows up’ approach to the U.S. trade war, Carney announced that tariffs on a wide range of U.S. consumer products in compliance with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) will be lifted on September 1st.
The prime minister made the announcement after a cabinet meeting on Friday.
“Canada currently has the best trade deal with the United States,” Carney told reporters. “By aligning our tariffs more closely with the provisions of CUSMA, we are ensuring that Canadian families and businesses benefit from lower costs and continued access to the U.S. market.”
The move will end 25% duties on items such as orange juice, wine, clothing and motorcycle products that were originally targeted in early 2025 when Ottawa retaliated against new U.S. protectionist measures.
But Carney said Canada will maintain 25 per cent tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and automobiles while talks continue on those sectors.
President Donald Trump has maintained his own levies on those industries.

Officials familiar with the decision say the shift is also intended to prepare for the upcoming review of CUSMA, expected to begin later this year.
Canada’s new approach emphasizes the agreement’s centrality while reducing reliance on counter-tariffs that have strained ties with the White House.
Carney’s stance marks a departure from the Trudeau era, when Ottawa responded swiftly to U.S. trade actions.
Carney himself campaigned on a tougher line against Trump but has since taken what he described Friday as a more “pragmatic” approach.
“Canada and the United States have re-established free trade for the vast majority of our goods,” Carney said. “We will continue to work intensively with the United States to resolve the issues that remain.”
Canada previously imposed tariffs on nearly $30 billion worth of U.S. exports in retaliation for American duties on steel, aluminum, and electric vehicles. Much of that will now be rolled back, leaving only core industrial sectors at issue.
