Prime Minister Mark Carney has tapped former Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette to lead a new federal agency tasked with overhauling how Ottawa uses technology and artificial intelligence.

Carney announced Digital Transformation Canada Thursday, naming Pichette its first CEO to modernize government services and cut duplication.

The appointment comes months after Pichette drew controversy for suggesting Canadians who study here and leave for jobs in the United States should repay the cost of their education.
