Nine years of NDP rule are over. Lorne Doerkson has swept the B.C. election, bringing Conservatives into power and promising tax cuts and pipelines while inheriting a $13.8-billion deficit.
“British Columbians voted for change last night, and for whatever reason, they liked the platform that we put forward,” Doerkson told reporters Sunday. “I intend to get to work right away.”
Preliminary results from Saturday’s election showed the Conservatives leading in 63 seats, having secured wins in 61 of those, compared with 28 for the NDP and 2 for the Greens, giving Doerkson a substantial majority in the 93-seat legislature.
The victory marks the first election win for a B.C. Conservative Party since 1928, ending decades in the political wilderness.
