As a former news reporter, I mainly covered violent crime cases in the courts. There was always a Court-hired indigenous legal worker on every case, advocating for anyone who was even mildly indigenous, to help them get a lighter sentence.
One time, I had a chat with the worker related to the story I was working on, but I brought up a question to her… I asked her, “wouldn’t you rather us just get to the stage where we are all considered equal?”
She looked at me with surprise, as if I was a little bit stupid, and said, “why would I want that, and then have to pay property taxes?”
Exactly ! - I could be wrong here and if so, please correct me . . . Canadians were made up of all kinds of immigrants years ago, came with no money or very little of it - cleared lands, build homes and farms of all kinds, raised families, build schools, churches, hospitals, railroads, all kinds of roads to every where, build universities to have skills trained for doctors, nurses, lawyers, RCMP, dentists, etc. - all with taxpayer's monies over the years and much more over the last 150 years ! - most of the folks with First Nations had very little to do with most of the building of Canada . . . there shouldn't be a two-tiered system of "justice" in favour of the Indigenous People !
