Who is the NDP’s newest leader, Avi Lewis?

The newly elected federal NDP leader Avi Lewis has built a public persona as a journalist, filmmaker, and climate activist. But beneath the polished media image lies a political trajectory shaped by generations of ideological commitment to far-left socialist organizing, and increasingly, Lewis has shown a willingness to push those ideas further than his predecessors ever did.

Born in May 1967 in Toronto, Lewis did not arrive at activism independently. He inherited it. His family history is steeped in left-wing political movements that trace back to early-20th-century European socialism.
