While still an MP, Freeland nabs “economic advisor” role in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland as an economic advisor.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland as an economic advisor, immediately sparking outrage among Conservative MPs who are raising ethical concerns about the sitting Canadian MP taking on a foreign role.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Chrystia Freeland as an advisor on economic development Monday, saying Ukraine needs to strengthen its internal resilience as the war with Russia continues.
“Today, I appointed Chrystia Freeland as an Advisor on Economic Development,” Zelenskyy said in a statement posted on X. “Chrystia is highly skilled in these matters and has extensive experience in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations.”
“Right now, Ukraine needs to strengthen its internal resilience – both for the sake of Ukraine’s recovery if diplomacy delivers results as swiftly as possible, and to reinforce our defence if, because of delays by our partners, it takes longer to bring this war to an end,” he added.
Prime Minister Mark Carney previously named Freeland as Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a role that has involved frequent travel to Europe and Ukraine.
The appointment comes as Carney travels to Paris to meet with allied leaders to discuss continued support for Ukraine and efforts to end the conflict.
The announcement follows Freeland’s selection as the incoming chief executive officer of the Rhodes Trust, an Oxford-based educational charity that administers the Rhodes Scholarship. She is set to begin that role on July 1 and is expected to relocate to Oxford, England.
Freeland has said she will not run in the next federal election but has not announced plans to resign her seat in the House of Commons.
Conservative MP Roman Baber criticized the appointment, saying it raises ethical concerns.
“To be clear, Chrystia Freeland is still a sitting Member of Parliament,” Baber said in a post on X. “Not only did she lack the decency to resign her seat, this is a blatant conflict of interest.”
Neither Freeland nor the Prime Minister’s Office commented on the criticism or on how the advisory role would intersect with her responsibilities as a sitting MP.
Canada has been a major financial and military backer of Ukraine since 2022, recently pledging an additional $2.5 billion in aid, bringing Canada’s total support to $24.5 billion.

The World Economic Forum’s complicity in the prolongation of this horrible war is now unmistakable. Freeland will be pledging more money to Ukraine that our bankrupt country cannot afford and Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook. Repaying the debt with a lower and lower valued Canadian dollar. Her “boss” Carney’s fellow globalist corporatists (including Brookfield Asset Management) stand to reap billions with the seed capital euphemistically labeled foreign aid. Absolute power….
Horrific behavior continues to be the first course with Canada's Liberal representatives. I watch with horror as they bow in total subjugation dragging Canada closer and closer to the horrid and putrid EU. Disgusting. But is it disgusting enough to wake up the dreadfully smug and willfully ignorant who now live among us?
