The MOU acronym was unfamiliar, so when I began to see it more frequently, I had to look up its meaning. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Political Euphemisms, (O-DOPE) there are many acceptable interpretations. Here are the top four.
1. Pie-in-the-Sky
2. Delay, delay, delay, until we can beg, borrow, or steal a majority whereupon all prior promises and other nonsense such as this MOU become null and void.
3. The promise to increase the industrial carbon tax by 600% is effective immediately, or sooner.
And no, every business in Canada will not increase their prices. They have all graciously agreed to absorb the cost - even the grocery giants! This enormous new tax will greatly offset the 27 new coal burning plants commissioned by China yesterday. Yay Canadumb!
4. Let's put a little more lipstick on this pig - see if we can get it to fly for the sheep.
And for Danielle Smith - whom I greatly admire - your 3-word admonition to 'Trust but verify'
would be much better if you left out the first two words.
The MOU is an obvious ploy to diffuse independence sentiment ahead of a referendum. Carney has spent his entire adult life working to ensure pipelines DO NOT get built. He didn't suddenly have an epiphany and now thinks oil is cool. He does however know that independence is boilng over in Alberta and this is a head fake to get fence sitters to believe there is a path forward within Canada.Unfortunately it will work because too many voters are low information don't know what they don't know and are easy to fool.
