"Voluntary" gun buyback comes with jail threat for retailers

The Liberals will re-open the controversial program for businesses on April 23 and are reminding business owners that the consequences for not complying are dire.

The Carney government is warning gun retailers to fall in line or face jail as it moves ahead with its firearms confiscation program next week, making clear that while participation may be “voluntary,” compliance is not.

“Businesses without specific privileges who remain in possession of the prohibited assault-style firearms after the amnesty period ends on October 30, 2026, will risk criminal liability, including for the unauthorized possession of prohibited firearms,” reads a statement from Public Safety on Tuesday.
