A 60-year-old man, arrested last summer for allegedly violently assaulting a Vancouver shopkeeper, was released on bail, only to be re-arrested and subsequently released once more.
James Chartrand, 60, was accused last September of demanding money and threatening a Mount Pleasant shopkeeper as she closed up her family shop in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.
According to police, the 23-year-old victim was leaving work in Mount Pleasant shortly before 9 p.m. on a Saturday when she was grabbed from behind by a man who was carrying a knife and had his face concealed. The suspect threatened to stab her, and as she called out for help, the suspect pulled her into a nearby lane.
Police credited three good Samaritans who were passing by the shop, heard a commotion, and intervened to stop the robbery and to prevent the victim from being seriously injured prior to the suspect’s arrest by officers from the Vancouver Police Department.
VPD media relations officer, Const. Tania Visintin said the victim “was choked, she was thrown to the ground — and those were just the physical things that happened to her.”
Chartrand was initially released but was re-arrested in April.
He has since been charged with robbery, assault by choking, assault with a weapon, disguising his face, and uttering threats.
He has also been released again and is due back in court on July 17.
This incident of serial offences and releases should be shockingly unique. Unfortunately, it is representative of 'justice' across the country. Contrasted by political persecution of those - like Tamara Lich, Chris Barber and the 'Coutts Four' - who dare to challenge the establishment. Canada has ceased to be 'Canada' by every meaningful measure.
