Another life was brutally cut short on Vancouver’s streets Monday as a man was stabbed to death on Granville Street, marking the city’s 25th homicide of the year.
Police say officers were called to Granville and Helmcken streets around 3:15 p.m. on Nov. 17 for reports of a stabbing. The victim, who had no identification, died in hospital. Investigators are working to confirm his identity, and no arrests have been made.
“He did not have any identification on him … we are working through our investigative process to identify him,” Sgt. Steve Addison said in a statement.
The killing has renewed concerns from the Hospitality Vancouver Association, which noted the attack occurred across from the Luugat single-room occupancy building on Granville Street.
The province purchased the property at 1176 Granville Street in 2020 and converted it into supportive housing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, the association called the situation on Granville Street “dangerous and unsustainable,” saying more than 300 SRO beds have been concentrated in a two-block stretch.
The group also warned that two other “highly problematic” SROs in the area pose “a real threat to public safety” and should be closed immediately.
