Charges have finally been approved for a Vancouver man after he allegedly charged after a woman, pushed her down, and urinated on her earlier this summer.
Chaas Robert Mearns, 21, is accused of one count of assault in relation to a late summer incident in downtown Vancouver.
According to Vancouver police, the 31-year-old victim was walking in the early morning near West Pender and Beatty Street just after 6 a.m., when she encountered a naked man standing on top of a parked car.
The suspect began yelling, police said, before he ran toward the victim, knocked her to the ground, and urinated on her.
Police reports say bystanders intervened and called 911, restraining the suspect until the authorities arrived.
Mearns was arrested at the scene and taken to the hospital under the Mental Health Act, where, according to the VPD, he remained in secure custody as of September 5.
At the time of his original apprehension, the suspect was arrested for the assault but not formally charged — just taken to the hospital under the Mental Health Act.
It remained unclear at that time if the suspect had a criminal history, as the police had not released his name.
Court records indicate Mearns was scheduled to appear in court on October 29, and that a bench warrant was issued for his arrest on that date. Further court records indicate a bail hearing was set for Friday, with the results of it still unknown.
