Prime Minister Mark Carney is firing back at Washington after the U.S. Embassy raised concerns about Canadian politicians influencing the American midterms on November 3.
An October 21 embassy fact sheet flagged Industry Minister Mélanie Joly’s tariffs targeting Republican states and Liberal MP Anthony Housefather’s campaigning for a Democrat as potential election interference.
The allegations followed U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra’s warning that Canadian politicians should keep their “nose out” of American politics.
Carney dismissed the accusations Friday while speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Turkey.
“There is no merit to these claims,” Carney said. “I’m disappointed that their envoy sees that as his role to make these suggestions.”
