U.S. refuses to extend CUSMA, sending it into annual review
Trade representatives from all three nations met virtually to discuss the future of the agreement on Wednesday, which was the deadline to decide on a 16-year term renewal.
The United States has decided not to renew the Canada-U.S.-Mexico-trade agreement “in its current form,” sending the trilateral agreement into an annual review process.
“The United States will continue to engage with Mexico and Canada to address the agreement’s shortcomings and our trade deficits with these countries,” said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in a statement on Wednesday. “However, the agreement remains in force pending resolution of these issues or until the agreement’s termination.”
