UN ranks Canada as world’s fourth-largest refugee nation

A new United Nations report reveals Canada processed 174,000 refugee claims in 2024, positioning it as the world's fourth-largest recipient of asylum seekers.
The 2024 Global Trends report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) found that Canada trailed only the United States (729,100), Egypt (433,900), and Germany (229,800) in the number of new asylum claims.
Canada's refugee system is grappling with an unprecedented 284,715 active claims. This surge, coupled with existing migration through temporary worker and student programs, has already placed a significant burden on the economy.
Canada was also ranked the second-largest resettlement country globally, having admitted 49,300 refugees in 2024 alone.
It also led the world in granting permanent residence to 27,400 refugees, outpacing much larger countries with more robust border security regimes such as the United States.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government recently introduced an omnibus bill, the Strong Border Act, aimed at tightening access to asylum protections.
The legislation, introduced last week, comes as the harm to Canada’s prosperity becomes more clear.
While the latest UN report praises Canada's "compassion and commitment," several polls in recent years indicate that most Canadians believe the country is accepting too many immigrants.
The federal Liberal government’s approach under Prime Minister Mark Carney has yet to change on this file, with over 800,000 immigrants admitted into Canada already in the first few months of 2025.
Seriously, What are we going to do with all of these people? No skills, questionable education and no money.
Elbows down Trudeau Carney Liberals.
Shouldn’t these people be going to the nearest safe country? Seems that being able to go to an airport, buy a ticket and fly doesn’t necessarily indicate you have no other option. At the very least we should be sending them back once their countries are safer ( Syria, Sri Lanka, Albania etc) Their crappy countries are not our problem.
