Ukraine is seeking to lock Canada into a 30-year energy partnership centred on Canadian liquefied natural gas, as Prime Minister Mark Carney embraces LNG exports after years of Trudeau-era reluctance toward proposed East Coast export projects.

The proposal follows recent agreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Carney as Ukraine braces for another winter of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Shmyhal said Canada and Ukraine also discussed a potential $650 million grant for natural gas ahead of winter.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power grid, gas facilities and heating infrastructure since its full-scale invasion in 2022, leaving millions vulnerable to blackouts during freezing winter months.
