The British prime minister refused to condemn U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated comments expressing the desire to make Canada the 51st state.
Sir Keir Starmer visited the White House Thursday where he honoured Trump with an invitation for a second state visit from King Charles III and worked on a new economic deal centred on the development of artificial intelligence.
In a press conference at the White House, Starmer was asked if he discussed Trump’s desire to annex Canada, to which Starmer said they did not discuss Canada and claimed there was no divide between himself and the American leadership.
“You mentioned Canada, I think you’re trying to find a divide between us that doesn’t exist. We’re the closest of nations and we had very good discussions today, but we didn’t discuss Canada.” said Starmer.
Towards the end of Starmer’s comments. Trump cut the prime minister off by saying “that’s enough.
Later that day, Fox News’ Bret Baier interviewed Starmer, asking the prime minister if King Charles has expressed concern about Trump’s 51st state comments. Starmer replied by talking about King Charles’ invitation to Trump and declined to answer on behalf of the king.
“As for what His Majesty might think of world events, that’s not for me to say. His Majesty will obviously express himself in his own way but it's not for me to express his views,” said Starmer.
Starmer’s visit to the United States has been characterized as a charm campaign in hopes to avoid the imposition of stiff tariffs from the Trump administration and to potentially strike a trade agreement.
However, his comments left Canadians who are concerned about Trump’s rhetoric towards Canada disquieted.
Conservative MP Dan Albas said that he was disappointed with Starmer’s comments considering Canada’s relationship with the United Kingdom.
“Disappointing, considering the trips that Trudeau has taken to the UK,” said Albas.
Trump has repeatedly said that he would like to make Canada the 51st American state, recently saying in front of the Republican Governors Association that Canadians can retain its national anthem after annexation.
Juno News is off to a great start, let's not get into silly articles like this, some second rate journalist trying to corner a public figure with an absurd question.
Starmer is an opportunist. Not our friend. And seems to love Muslim criminals who groomed English girls. He was a prosecutor when this was happening in Britain and did nothing.
