A University of Toronto political science professor has been placed on leave after making a social media post in which she said, “shooting is honestly too good for so many of you fascist c****”.
Altenna Chedore, I agree about the free speech but you forget or maybe not realize that all professional careers include a Code of Conduct (deontology)
deontology
/ˌdiːɒnˈtɒlədʒi/
noun
1. the study of the nature of duty and obligation. )
Any breach of this Oath requires the subject, in this case the teacher, to be held in contempt and breach of conduct of her/his deontological Oath.
So, sorry but yes, she must be fired and prevented from spewing her hatred of conservatism in our education system, meaning she gets fired AND her teaching credentials/certification revoked.
On leave- does this mean with pay? She should be fired. Think about happened to Dr. Jordan Peterson… will she have to take a “reeducation class? Unconscionable! Her post is hateful.
So it appears the university wasn't going to do anything about it until the education minister said they had to. And on leave? With pay I'll bet. She will probably be back at the university within a month. Juno needs to follow up to see where this woman ends up.
They need to fire her. She should not be teaching kids. She’s a danger to the university & to society as a whole. Who knows what kind of garbage she’s filling these kids heads with.
Canadians must learn that we do not have the luxury of the US First Amendment with respect to free speech. Speech of this kind is not tolerated in Canada - like it or not. Secondly, this supposedly well educated person has no idea of the elements of fascism. John Carpay gives one of the better definitions in his book " Corrupted by Fear" . Normal people do not want to kill people with whom they disagree. Thus, this woman needs to be removed from any public forum, teaching job, union member or not and be ostracized from our society.
This professor should be flat-out fired. Was she sent home with pay? I would not want her near any young adult spewing such hatred, tarnishing their minds. No matter what you thought of Charlie Kirk, he was a son, a father, a husband, and loved his country. And his life was cut short because some people didn't like his opinions. Why do some people not be able to see the humanness in this? I find her and others like her, a disturbing trend. I hope she is done 'educating' others. God forbid.
You are absolutely right Canadasceptic! There are too many who lack compassion today and they are often in positions of authority or power. This 'rot' as you say will destroy us.
Dr. Jordan Peterson was a professor at u of toronto..he left and now lives ìn the USA. He said and I agree that most if not all the universities in Canada
are full of left wing academic rhetoric and they teach our teachers who teach our kids..explains a lot..universities are by and large our nation's biggest problem.
Mr. Ford. Your tolerance of Leftist influences in public schools emboldens university professors to take these kinds of stands. Get politics and porn out of our schools!
Replace her with AI or self-paced learning program. This will reduce the University's loaded costs of salary, benefits and pension. And, she needs to be black listed from teaching at any academic level in Canada. They'll need to teachers in the Ukraine very soon. Take a broom and dust bin.
And we all wonder where university students get their ideas and their hate-filled rhetoric, which includes calling anyone who challenges their empty ideas a fascist or a racist. She should be fired and banned from teaching. Some may say, what about Freedom of Speech -- some will argue her speech is hate speech and they may be right. Others may argue, yes we have freedom of speech, so there are also consequences of exercising it. She is a teacher, a mentor shaping minds, her public comments should not be expressed in such a manner period. There is a price to pay. Firing is pretty minor compared to the price Kirk paid for exercising his right to speak freely.
I abhor what she said. I detest it...but I support her right to speak her sick sick opinion. If we encourage the "lock em up" or "fire em" line...that's not good. Charlie Kirk supported free speech. Even despicable speech.
She's free to speak -- as in she won't be arrested or jailed for her hateful words -- but there are consequences for free speech. If her free speech represents a breach of some code of conduct she has signed on to then her employer has every right to get rid of her. However, given how deep the rot goes in our universities I'm guessing she'll be back by next semester when the furor has died down.
She can post them on her personal social media account. She CANNOT have a job where she is in a position to influence or preach her vile views to a captive audience . Period. She can pay for a private venue just like anyone else who wants to speak their mind. I wonder though how many venues would cancel her at the last minute because of pressure. Not many I suspect because HER views are freedom of speech and messages of freedom, kindness, peace, etc are not.
I have been thinking about my comment and I wasn't right. I DO believe in freedom of speech as long as it's not hate speech. If you're job has a code of conduct that you must not cross...and you do it anyway then you need to be disciplined. For sure. But not lose your job. However, I believe that if you add "actions" to the same speech then losing your job would be warranted. I say this because there is a teacher in TO who showed his class of 10 and 11 yr Olds the video of Charlie's murder. Children told their parents. Unacceptable! THAT goes beyond freedom of speech.

Unfortunately, there are lots more where she comes from. She's just one of the few stupid enough to post on social media. The rot runs deep.

I thought inciting violence on line was already against the law? Why is she not fired?
Scum

In my opinion.
Perhaps for citizens in general, but she has the added responsibility of teaching young people and representing an institution of higher education.
So she's being given paid time off. I'm sure she'll use it wisely.
Ya a leave with pay is not appropriate. She should be fired and her Union should back the firing also!!
I truly hope this “professor” (she should lose that title) is NOT on PAID leave!!
They learned hate speech from school and justin turdo.
