After Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to leverage Ontario’s energy and retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. over threatened tariffs on Canada’s auto and steel industry, U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to rename Lake Ontario.
In a post to Truth Social Tuesday morning, Trump announced that the U.S. is “giving serious consideration” to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, and that the U.S. administration doesn’t “expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.
The announcement comes a day after Ford and Trump traded insults, and the former threatened to leverage Ontario’s energy to charge Americans extra for using Ontario power. Ford also advocated for dollar-for-dollar tariffs against the U.S.
