New tariffs on Canadian dairy and lumber are en route, according to an announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump. The latest round of tariffs is slated to take effect as early next week at the...
I, for one, am glad of the tariffs on American dairy products coming to Canada. How about just not buying them, period!!??? American laws allow hormones and antibiotics for their livestock, which doesn't sit well with my desire for healthy food.
The US has been tariffing canadian lumber for many years. But he nor anyone else mentions that. There should be no tariff on anything with freetrade. Just as long as the buyer pays the price the seller is asking.
Softwood lumber tariffs from 8% to 20% have been in place since the 80's!
Why? Because US forests are mostly privately owned and the lumber produced is costlier than the mostly Crown owned forests in Canada. The US argued that this is a form of government subsidy and put tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber - to balance the production cost differences between the 2 countries.
But US home builders still bought Canadian Lumber because of the higher strength rating of Canadian lumber (a result of our colder weather).
So, any extra tariffs from the US are punitive - aimed at US lumber producers, to force them to buy American!
This is a very concerning development. Trump is talking about violating the USMCA, which he signed! This will mean he is not to be trusted.
My concern is with the implications of this broken trust. It means future agreements are useless. That is a terrible prospect since the only alternative to trusted agreement is use of force.
Someone please tell me why I am wrong. I want to be wrong.
I urge all thoughtful citizens to read this brief description of supply management. You will gain some understanding of why it's such a contentious issue.

Trump's administration is doing a lot of good things, but I think he is way offside on this. I don't know where the facts lie on this issue, time will bring that out, but it's quickly morphing from a fentanyl fight into an actual trade war. Since when do rational governments declare war without a period of negotiation? People get hurt in trade wars as well as in real wars and people are going to get hurt. To declare tariffs and then add a clause automatically adding new tariffs whenever your opponent retaliates strikes me as adolescent. He's basically setting up an automatic major war.
Whatever happened to starting from a rational point and turning up the heat if and when needed?
Trump after the dairy cartel within the hallowed province. Now listen to Canada's #1 Fool come to their defence.

The current reality of Canada's dairy cartel.
