U.S. President Donald Trump is accusing Prime Minister Mark Carney of falsely claiming Washington threatened French-language protections during failed Canada-U.S. trade negotiations.
Trump pushed back Tuesday after Carney said French language and culture were non-negotiable in the failed talks.
“This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Carney offered a different account, stating on Saturday that Canada wouldn’t compromise its sovereignty, key industries, or French language and culture.
“For my government and for Canada, these issues were never on the table, even though the United States tried until the very last minute,” Carney said.
Trump, however, claimed to have never considered interfering with Canadians speaking French.
