POWELL RIVER BC lost it's only employer, the pulp mill, and is basically broke. The local Band wants to rename the city in a language only 5 people in Canada speak. The city has provided infrastructure for the band for a century. What does the band demand - a name change without at vote. What makes this so unreasonable is that over the years the Band has accumulated a nest egg of $92 MILLION DOLLARS. For what? Shouldn't they have been paying for their services they received? Shouldn't they contribute to the city? Nope - they want their own name.
Some historical context is required for Toronto’s tax hikes. After combining all the surrounding mini-cities into one Toronto - the City was left with extreme tax variations. To that end, much of Toronto pays far less in tax than any of the surrounding GTA. The fact that a 20% hike occurred in 3 years largely reflects lack of tax hikes in the 20 years leading up to modern times.
I don’t disagree - there is fiscal mismanagement and wasted bureaucracy spending in the city - not to mention some potential outright fraud by some city employees working part days for full pay.
