The left-wing Toronto Star published a column Thursday calling for Father’s Day to be scrapped, arguing the “made-up celebration has burdened children of the world.”

In 2025, a similar column called upon Canadians to thank mothers on Father’s Day.

“It’s time to abolish Father’s Day,” writes entertainment columnist Vinay Menon. “For more than a century, this made-up celebration has burdened children of the world into making impulse buys of novelty mugs and gadgets.”

“Visit your dad. Call your dad,” he continues. “Solicit his advice, especially if it involves power tools or the fastest commuter routes. Give your dad a hug. Tell your dad how much you appreciate everything he does for you.”
