Toronto police have charged a 16-year-old with first-degree murder in the shooting death last month of eight-year-old JahVai Roy.
Toronto police have charged a 16-year-old with first-degree murder in the shooting death last month of eight-year-old JahVai Roy.
Police are also seeking the public’s assistance in apprehending 17-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and 18-year-old Amarii Lindner, who are also wanted on first-degree murder charges.
Chief Myron Demkiw told reporters Wednesday their sole arrestee “was fifteen at the time of the crime.” He remains unnamed under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Demkiw said the now 16-year-old accused was arrested Sept. 5 and faces a first-degree murder charge and five firearm offences, including possession of a loaded prohibited firearm and altering a weapon to fire automatically.
Investigators added the accused was arrested with a loaded gun and a search warrant executed at a Toronto residence turned up additional evidence.
This summer, JahVai was struck by a stray bullet while sleeping inside his Toronto home near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive just after midnight on Aug. 16. He was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries.
The youth arrested in connection with that murder appeared in bail court on September 6. However, because his identity is shielded by the YCJA, it is unclear if he remains in custody.
Meanwhile, in an increasingly common move, police have taken the extraordinary step of releasing the names and pictures of two additional suspects who are also minors.
Like the 16-year-old in custody, they also face first-degree murder charges.
Police required judicial authorization to identify the youths publicly, which expires Sept. 12.
