Canada’s top auto industry representative is warning that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to slash tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and open the Canadian market could make already delicate trade talks with the United States even harder.

Brian Kingston, president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, stated that Ottawa’s decision to replace the 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made EVs with a 6.1 per cent most-favoured-nation tariff “further complicates” trade talks later this year. This was shared with Bloomberg at the Canadian International Auto Show.
