Taxpayers spent over $200M on “period poverty” at home and abroad
At least $176.8M in international projects and tens of millions more domestically were spent to address "period poverty."
While Canadian families struggle with rising grocery bills and record housing costs, governments have funnelled hundreds of millions into “menstrual equity” initiatives at home and abroad.
A review of federal grant databases shows at least $177 million committed to international menstrual projects since 2018, alongside roughly $32 million in federal and provincial domestic funding. The total does not include in-kind corporate partnerships worth millions more.
This investigation reveals how a niche social issue became a multi-level government priority.
