Tax Freedom Day arrives as Canadians pay 43.5 per cent of their income in taxes
If Canadians paid all their taxes up front, they would work the first 158 days of this year before bringing any money home for themselves and their families.
Canadians marked Tax Freedom Day on Tuesday—the point in the year when they begin earning for themselves rather than paying taxes, according to a new Fraser Institute study.
“If Canadians paid all their taxes up front, they would work the first 158 days of this year before bringing any money home for themselves and their families,” said Jake Fuss, director of fiscal studies at the Fraser Institute.
In 2026, the average Canadian family will pay $72,539 in taxes, or 43.5 per cent of income—virtually unchanged from 2025, when it paid $68,266, or 43.1 per cent.
