A cafe and restaurant in Surrey, B.C., owned by a Bollywood comedian, has been shot at for the third time in four months.
The Surrey Police Service is investigating another shooting at Kap’s Cafe—an upscale coffee house and Indian restaurant owned by Bollywood star Kapil Sharma—after reports of shots being fired at the business on 85 Avenue and 120 Street at around 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
The latest incident comes after the café was fired at on two separate occasions within a few weeks of each other earlier this summer.
Kap’s Cafe was hit by gunfire first on July 10—only days after its grand opening—and then again on August 7.
In a brazen move, the shooters appear to have taken a video of the latest shooting, which has now circulated widely on social media.
A video of the first shooting in July was also widely circulated on social media, showing someone firing a handgun repeatedly at the business linked to Sharma.
The first two shootings have “definitive ties” to extortion, according to SPS officers.
The force has been less clear about whether the third shooting is related to an ongoing extortion crime wave primarily affecting Canadian cities with large South Asian diasporas.
When speaking with the media, SPS spokesperson Ian MacDonald would only go as far as to say the third shooting has the “earmarks of extortion.”
Indian media, meanwhile, has reported that the shooters may be linked to the Bishnoi gang, which operates primarily out of India and has been accused of targeting members of Canada’s Sikh community.
Last month, Ottawa listed the criminal organization as a terrorist entity, giving the federal government the power to freeze or seize property or assets related to the group.
According to Surrey’s newly formed municipal police force, there have already been 65 reported extortion-related cases and 35 connected shootings in the city so far this year.
