Speaker at Canadian Islamic convention says Muslims should not support LGBTQ
Chicago-based scholar Yasir Nadeem al Wajidi told Montreal-area Islamic convention attendees that Muslims should not join Pride events, despite past support from LGBTQ activists.
An American Islamic scholar told a Canadian audience that while the LGBTQ community has publicly supported Muslims in the past, Muslims should not return that support by participating in Pride events or LGBTQ activism during an event billed as “Montreal’s largest Islamic convention.”
The LIT convention was held July 26 in Laval, Quebec. According to the event’s website, the conference bills itself as “Montreal’s largest Islamic convention,” targeting youth between the ages of 15 and 30 with the stated goal of “unify[ing] the Muslims.”
Speaking at the event, Yasir Nadeem al Wajidi reflected on protests against the U.S. travel ban during Donald Trump’s first presidency, saying the LGBTQ community “came out with full force in support of Muslims” by marching, protesting, and standing alongside Muslims.
Al Wajidi acknowledged that some Muslims may feel obliged to reciprocate that support but argued that Islamic teachings require a different response.
