Showdown over Quebec’s use of the notwithstanding clause reaches Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is set to hear a landmark case this week on Quebec’s controversial use of the notwithstanding clause, which shields its law banning public service employees from wearing religious symbols.

The constitutional showdown pits free expression against provincial rights, with over 47 interveners. including government officials and civil rights groups, lining up to challenge the controversial legislation.
