A mother with Indigenous family ties says she raised concerns about land acknowledgements for years, but when she formally protested, Chatelech Secondary treated her as a threat.

Lara Yates, a Sechelt mother of four, said she had long questioned the practice. Her eldest daughter is of Indigenous heritage, and all of her daughters were enrolled in the district’s Indigenous learning program.

The dispute escalated after one of her daughters failed a course for refusing to produce a land acknowledgement.
