With the Trump administration threatening 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian goods, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is rejecting calls to retaliate by taxing or restricting Canadian energy and resource exports.
“Banning or taxing the export of Canadian resources would only kill tens if not hundreds of thousands of Canadian jobs, and we would be tariffing ourselves,” Poilievre said.
“That would not be a good idea.”
Instead, Poilievre wants Canada to turn its vast energy and critical mineral reserves into negotiating leverage.
“We say to our American friends, we’ve got 10 of the 12 NATO-defined minerals needed to fight a war. We’ve got the minerals needed to fertilize your crops. We’ve got the fourth biggest oil supply in the world,” he said.
