The Carney Liberals are heading to China again to lure electric vehicle companies, just as tensions with Washington are already boiling over.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is in China this week courting major Chinese EV makers, including BYD, Chery, Geely and Shanghai Launch, as Ottawa looks to rewire Canada’s auto sector away from the United States after tariffs reshaped trade ties.

The outreach comes even as U.S. officials warn the move could further strain already fragile negotiations on the future of North American trade.
