Senate passes Bill C-9 with amendment banning nooses as hate symbols
The Canadian Senate has passed Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, back to the House of Commons with an amendment banning “nooses” as hate symbols. The law is expected to pass its review in parliament.
After rejecting an attempt to add “residential school denialism” to Bill C-9, the Combating Hate Act, the Senate passed the legislation with a single amendment adding “nooses” to the list of prohibited hate symbols.
Because of the amendment, Bill C-9 must return to the House of Commons for review before receiving royal assent and becoming law.
