Canadian schools should bring back textbooks as growing evidence suggests years of screen-based learning have failed to improve student achievement, according to a new report.

The Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy published a report that argues that there is limited evidence that the use of laptops, tablets, and digital platforms that are increasingly displacing printed materials in Canadian classrooms has benefited academic results.

“Despite the billions spent, there is little convincing evidence that digital tools have improved student achievement,” wrote author Paul Bennett, a senior fellow with the foundation. “In fact, there appears to be a negative relationship.”
