Sault Ste. Marie asks Ottawa for help amid Algoma Steel layoffs
The mayor of Sault Ste. Marie is seeking financial aid in the fall out of Algoma Steel laying off roughly 1,000 workers from its steel mill.

Algoma Steel laid off roughly 1,000 workers Monday, one of the largest rounds of layoffs in Sault Ste. Marie’s history, despite receiving $500 million in taxpayer subsidies last fall.
Mayor Matthew Shoemaker called Monday “a very challenging day,” stating during a city council meeting that the “entire community stands ready to support all those affected.”
