Saskatchewan’s new legislation targeting dangerous drugs and street weapons officially came into force last week, giving municipalities and First Nations the power to opt-in to stronger enforcement measures. However, they can choose to disregard the act if they want.

The Safe Public Spaces Act prohibits the possession, transportation, storage, or alteration of items that could be used as street weapons. Some items cited include bear spray, knives, machetes, and hypodermic needles. It also bans drugs such as fentanyl and methamphetamine in public spaces.
